Portland-based Ryan Francesconi's stock has soared of late as the main man on Joanna Newsom's remarkable triple album Have One On Me.He arranged and played all over that massive opus, as well as figuring centrally in its live incarnation and the Ys Street Band of Newsom's previous record. But Francesconi does his own thing too. His solo acoustic guitar creates a rich sound that hints at his extensive musical interests - Baroque, Balkan, Turkish, Americana and jazz improvisation. This intimate concert will also feature Melbourne folk favourite Grand Salvo in a rare Sydney appearance previewing songs from his forthcoming new album as well as acclaimed Sydney outfit The Singing Skies, whose Routine and War album garnered great notices in 2011.Tickets $18 + bf - available now from Moshtix:http://www.moshtix.com.au/event.aspx?id=53071&ref=francesconirattlerWatch Ryan Francesconi - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CT2PP4hyh84&feature=player_embedded

Sunday Soup at The Red Rat - Sun Feb 5 2012

 A grassroots community grant for creative projects

Sunday Soup is a grassroots model for funding small to medium sized creative projects through community meals. The basic recipe is that people come together, pay a fee, share a meal, and listen to a bunch of ideas and things people are working on or making. Everyone who purchases the meal gets one vote and all the income from that meal is given as a grant to support the creative project with the most votes. The first Sunday Soup at The Red Rat is 5-8pm Sunday 5 Feb. Entry fee is $7-$10 sliding scale (includes a meal and a vote).Sunday Soup at The Red Rat is 5-8pm Sunday 5 February 2012. Entry fee is $7-$10 sliding scale (includes a meal and a vote).

This Sunday - we will see and collectively vote on giving a grant to:

1. The Rizzeria
The Rizzeria is a non-profit printing collective established in 2008 when we bought a stencil press with money loaned by Sydney artists. Since then we've held numerous workshops to teach people stencil printing techniques and made the press available to anyone via an open booking system on our website. Unfortunately our press is broken beyond repair so we're looking for funds to buy a new one. The press is usually in heavy demand as it's the only one of its kind (managed by artists and operating on a non-profit basis) in Sydney. It's an affordable way to experiment with colour printing and items produced on it have a unique look. We'd love some funds to help us buy a new machine and keep providing this service for people to make stencil-printed posters, zines, beer labels, envelopes, temporary "silkscreens", etc.

::::::::::::

2. The Bus
The idea behind the The Bus is to transform a 60s bus in my backyard into a unique suburban based Artist in Residence space. It will offer artists from any field who have a strong commitment to creating work with a social/community/health orientation a specialised space to cultivate and showcase their ideas. Artists will be able reside in a semi self-contained restored 60’s bus housed in my backyard, while a studio space in an artist cooperative warehouse less than 1km away will be available for use full-time. Each residency will be offered for a 2-3 week time period and will include free board in the bus, access to the kitchen and bathroom of the main house, free access to the studio space, a bike to access the studio and the industrial and natural delights of the inner-city Novocastrian landscape – many accessible within only 4km of The Bus.

The money from Sunday Soup would be used to help transform my bus into a liveable, workable space. It already has power connected, but needs re-cladding inside, the floor repolished, painting of the interior and some broken windows fixed. I already have the studio space, so any money provided by Sunday Soup would be directed towards getting The Bus itself operation for residencies by April 2012.

3. UMBRELLA THEATRE
Umbrella Theatre has been around for just over one and a half years, and it's time for some new stories. We are a traveling mini theatre and after one and a half years, we need some new material (metaphorically and physically!). Puppets, poetry and story telling is what we are about. And that's what our new shows will be about. Our new shows: think dark, sexy, scary, funny and a bit odd. We are going to create two new characters and their worlds that will travel the world (well, definently the inner west, Sydney, NSW and maybe another state this year!!!)

I, Natalia Ladyko, have personally put a lot of money into Umbrella Theatre, and so has the other ladies that are a part of Umbrella Theatre Collective. Our time is always free (hours upon hours). We would love some love in the form of funding to help us get the materials to make new puppets and mini sets (and things to carry them in). Our company tries to use recycled goods as much as possible - re-give life to 'once loved treasures' of other people.

www.umbrellatheatre.com.au

::::::::::::

4. The Cardshow Collective "art meets politics" project
The Cardshow is a group concept show that will bring together 56 artists predominately from Sydney and Melbourne: feat. Susan Norrie, Reg Mombassa, Simon Yates, Hazzy Bee, Linda Dement, Jacqueline Olivetti + 50 artists from a range of disciplines and backgrounds. To further illuminate their powers combined, this show will be accompanied by the production of 1000 decks of playing cards. The idea is taken from a 1979 show in the UK.

Our 2012 interpretation of this concept will bring together local, grassroots and professional artists for a political cause. We will be selling these custom cards to raise money and awareness for anti-nuclear campaigning in Australia, in particular to support Muckaty Traditional Owners in the Northern Territory fight against the imposition of a nuclear waste dump on their homelands. This campaign for human and environmental justice is led by Traditional Owners and supported by trade unions, national health and environmental organisations. The Federal Government's last radioactive waste dump plans for South Australia was abandoned in 2004 due to the vibrant community campaign against it. The battle is on again, and needs a new wave of support. The exhibition of cards will run for a month at Mori Gallery.

Money is needed for travel, campaign materials and the ongoing legal action the Traditional Owners and taking against the body that nominated their land without their consent.

::::::::::::

5. Trashbaggery www.trashbaggery.com
An online web blog site that has been operating now for just under 1 year. Created by Caroline Cordier, Creative Director and Mastermind for Trashbaggery, the site is a place to write about all the cool going’s on in and around Sydney. The site helps to provide fashion and make tips, coverage on events and support to community initiatives and fundraisers, publicity and profiles for up and coming performers and event listings for up and coming events.

The site has real articles from real people and the Trashbaggery team has now grown to over 12 members, of volunteer photographers, editors, presenters and videographers who give up their free time and skills to help provide free event coverage and publicity for up and coming artists and events, in particular fundraisers and community initiatives that do not have marketing funds to do this themselves.

We are in the process of putting together an event (at The Red Rattler 17 March) and want to use this opportunity to get more people involved and to know about trashbaggery.com. This is an opportunity for up and coming performers / fashion designers / artists / musicians etc to showcase their skill, with some funds behind us we could create an event to really give back to our readership.

::::::::::::

6. Oxford St Design Store
We have set up the Oxford St. Design Store as a place for local designers, artists, creatives and writers to sell there work with one condition – nothing can be sold for more than $20. Despite the low cost we still want contributors to be able to make a profit and it’s also a great opportunity for them to get their work out to a broader audience and see how it's received.
Operating as a multi-purpose space the Design Store challenges the idea of what a commercial space should be. It isn't just a shopping experience, but is a place of value, not only economically but also culturally for the community that it inhabits. The large back section of the store will be set up to run workshops, talks and as a desk space for hire. The workshops will provide an opportunity for the wider community to develop their ideas, share skills and participate/communicate directly with artists and designers.

We have been given a reduced rent space from City of Sydney but setting up, fitting out and running the store is completely up to us! Our aim is not to generate massive profits but to run the store for the community - for local artists and as a place of collaboration and learning. To do this we want to create an inspiring and engaging environment. We’re not thinking hi-end, we’re talking simple, bold, lo-fi, and sustainable but with a unique look and feel. But this still costs money.

::::::::::::

7. Pakistani ART CAFE
An arts café is a place that provides food and arts. Aimed at encouraging local artists, musicians, painters, photographers, poets, to find space for their expression of arts. Combined with a coffee house business, the purpose of the Arts cafe is to grow a small business around the traditional coffee shop as well as utilize local artistic talent to generate discussion about art and an appreciation for art in the local community.

The cafe' will be a platform for emerging Pakistani artists in Australia.. People can come perform, exhibit, display. There will be regular music and dance performances by Pakistani musicians such as dhol, sitar and tabla. Workshops by Pakistani artisans demonstrating hand weaving and natural dyeing, as well as meditation and henna workshops.

What am I promoting and selling:
1. Traditional snack/finger food and drinks from Pakistan. e.g Kashmiri chai, laddoo, samosas, chai,
2. Traditional accessories from Pakistan: chooryaan, parandaay, pazaib and more.
3. Traditional textile from Pakistan : ajrak, chunri, sussi available as stolles and wraps.
4. Truck and riksha art textile: This section is going to be new designs designed by young designers in Pakistan and will include contemporary clothing like t-shirts, kurtas, skirts.
5. Art prints, digital painting, posters and collages

::::::::::::

8. Loene Carmen/Peter Head Album Funding
My name is Loene Carmen, I am a singer/songwriter and my father, Peter Head - who has just turned 66 - is an incredible piano player/singer. Together we play shows doing blues/jazz/soul/
country songs of our own and other people's and we are trying to raise enough to fund two days recording with an engineer at 301 Studios, a really great studio with a grand piano. We've been playing together forever, so two days will be enough for us to finally capture our sound, old school style.

$3000 will make it just possible to record, mix and master this unique album but any funding would help make recording possible. However, as we are both full time professional musicians, we are too broke to be that indulgent.

My dad still performs five nights a week and has released a couple of solo albums. In his younger days he recorded with Bon Scott, toured with Rolling Stones and Elton John, played non stop all over Australia and toured Asia, Europe and New York.

I have released 4 critically acclaimed albums, all of which I've paid for myself with an evil credit card that charges 26% interest. I'd do it again to fund this but I can't as I'm still paying back my last album. There are very few daddy/daughter duos in this world, and I reckon what we do is pretty special.

 A special event screening of Community Action Centre for The Mardi Gras Film Festival presented by Queer Screen and The Red Rattler.Community Action Center (A.K. Burns + A.L. Steiner, 2010, TRT 69 mins.) is a sociosexual video which incorporates the erotics of a community where the personal is not only political, but sexual. This project was heavily inspired by 1970’s porn-romance-liberation films which served as distinct portraits of the urban inhabitants, landscapes and the body politic of a particular time and place. Community Action Center is a unique contemporary womyn-centric composition that serves as both an ode and a hole-filler. Sex, sexuality and the complexities of gendered bodies are inherently political. This project is a small archive of an intergenerational community built on collaboration, friendship, sex and art. The work attempts to explore a consideration of feminist fashion, sexual aesthetics and an expansive view of what is defined as ‘sex’. Burns and Steiner worked with artists and performers who created infinitely complex gender and performance roles that are both real and fantastical, set to a soundtrack of music culled from the worldwide sisterhood: Chicks on Speed, Effi Briest, Electrelane, K8 Hardy, Lesbians on Ecstasy, Light Asylum, MEN, Motherland, NGUZUNGUZU, I.U.D. (Lizzi Bougatsos & Sadie Laska), Kinski and Thee Majesty (Genesis P-Orridge), and featuring original compositions by Justin Bond, Nick Hallett & Sam Greenleaf Miller, Ashland Mines & Wu Tsang, Sergei Tcherepnin and Tri-State Area. The video seeks to expose and reformulate paradigms that are typical of porn typologies, intentionally exploiting tropes for their comical value, critical consideration and historical homage. The artists have created a reason to reflect on the cultural realness of homo-grown lesbian sexuality. The work aims to be a hedonistic and distinctly political adventure.Contains sexually explicit content7.30pm To book tickets online <http://mgff.queerscreen.com.au/community-action-centre/>To find out what else is screening at MGFF <http://mgff.queerscreen.com.au/>For more information on the artist's and their other projects < http://akburns.net/> and <http://www.saatchi-gallery.co.uk/artists/al_steiner.htm>

Perhaps you are familiar with the identity and concept of Daddy, but you have never even heard or thought about Mommy?

***Please note: This kinky event is a class and panel discussion about negotiated power dynamics between consenting adults.***

Then please join us for The Queer Service Class and Queer Mommy Dynamics Panel - which are being presented in order to shed some much needed light on these subjects!

Visiting SpecialGuest
Alix Iron from San Francisco will be hosting the event in conjunction with the Sydney Leather Pride Association.
Ms Sydney Leather 2011 will be the moderator for the evening. We are fortunate to
have Miss Kelli Jean, Huckleberry Spin, Holly Zwalf, Vincent Valentine and Bettie Brimstone as the eloquent and fabulous panelists who will be participating in one or both panels.
We will be engaging in a lively discussion about such matters as:
 What kinds of service are there? What does service mean to us and why do we do it? What do we get from doing service? How is punishment & reward handled and does it effect us?

And Where does Mommy & Boy/Girl the continuum fit along the identity spectrum? What are the physical and mental titillating aspects of Mommy & Boy/Girl play? How does gender influence Mommy & Boy/Girl play? Can Mommy be Daddy too? Are there taboo implications and stigma around Mommy & Boy/Girl play?

Doors open 630 pm $15 $10

Alix Iron is a dapper rockabilly genderqueer FTM dandy intersex poof who is feminist to the core and perverted as all get out. He's a proud pinky-extending, pompadour sporting, swagger in his stride stepping Mommy's boy and faggy butchdyke creature. He came out into the leather kinky BDSM community in San Francisco in 1988 and was raised up believing in the ethos of the Old Guard. He thinks manners, etiquette and chivalry are super hot, and relishes in serving fancy n foxy high femmes who have solid integrity, a strong sense of style, and firm political convictions. He writes, teaches and holds community panels on such topics as "Queer Mommy/Boy Dynamics", "Pansies, Dandies & Sissies: Fae Representations of Masculinity," and "How May I Serve You Best?". He is the owner of the Inverted Eye (www.InvertedEye.com) – an online store offering subtly kinky vintage items and discreet fetish antiques.

 MEN is a Brooklyn-based band and art/performance collective led by LE TIGRE'S JD Samson, cult icon and leader in the LGBTQ community. MEN focus on the energy of live performance and radical potential of dance music. Their music speaks of issues such as wartime economies, sexual compromise, and the demand for liberties through lyrical content and an inventive, high-energy stage show.

The group began in 2007 with the DJ/production/remix team of LE TIGRE members JD Samson and Johanna Fateman. With LE TIGRE on hiatus, when the duo began to write new songs, it made sense to merge their efforts with JD's other project HIRSUTE (Michael O'Neill, JD Samson, Emily Roysdon and Ginger Brooks Takahashi).

JD and Michael now comprise the core of MEN, with Johanna Fateman and artist Emily Roysdon contributing as writers, consultants, and producers. The band enjoys changing the shape of the project and collaborating every tour with new instrumentalists and visual elements. Last tour they were joined by Tami Hart of the band Making Friendz and this fall will be joined by percussionist Lee Free.

Selling out the physical copies of their debut self-released EP "MEN", they released their debut album "Talk About Body" via IAMSOUND in 2011. The band have toured extensively all over the world, played Coachella 2011, have supported both Peaches and Gosip, a European/UK run and a headlining West Coast US tour, as well as a recent US tour in support of CSS.

STEREOGAMOUS is the remix project of Seymour Butz (Club Kooky) and Paul Mac (Itchy-E and Scratch-E. Checkout the remix they did for MEN's 'Credit Card Babies' here.

HOLY BALM are a three piece psychadelic dance band from Sydney. Lets join them on the dance floor.
