Mobility Information

The ground floor theatre space (main space) is wheelchair accessible, the stage is also wheelchair accessible (by prior arrangement). Early seating can be arranged for those requiring upright or lounge seating. Most events cannot accommodate a lying down space but a horizontal resting space can be arranged upstairs if required. At audience participation events speakers with light writers can be accommodated for, please advise the tech as soon as you arrive at the event (or by prior arrangement).

When you arrive at the Red Rattler there is a graded driveway (dropped kerb) leading to the front of the building.

Entry to the venue proper is through a door on the street which leads to a short hallway (with a DDA compliant mild incline ramp), which then leads to another door on the left for entry to the main theatre/bar area.  The hallway is fitted with floor táctiles also for DDA requirements.  The stairs to the rooftop garden are fitted with handrails as are required for mobility.

Measurements for these access points at the main doorway entry to the building are as follows:-

  • Street Door: 86 cm wide
  • Hallway 155 cm wide
  • Venue entry door 79 cm wide

A graphic representation is shown below (not to scale):

If your wheelchair or mobility device exceeds these dimensions we can make access available through the roller doors and double door entry at the front of the venue. Please email manager@redrattler.org if you require access through the roller doors.

Once inside the venue there are no further stairs within the main area, aside from within the non-wheelchair accessible bathrooms (please see below for information about wheelchair accessible and ambulant bathrooms). The floor is semi polished poured concrete and is at a very slight incline towards the stage area. Some event runners will bring a portable dancefloor which often has an inclined lip but is wheelchair accessible, otherwise the dancefloor/seating area is a level surface.

At the bar there is a purpose designed lowered area to the right of the bar which is specifically for wheelchair users. While we have signage and training for staff on the purpose of this area it is often hard to keep it clear of patrons during very busy events.

Auslan Interpreters

Interpreters are provided by Event Organisers. Please check the event listing for information about Auslan interpretation for the event.

Scent Sensitivities

The space is not 100% scent-free. Smoke machines and incense are used in some performances. No smoking is allowed in the building, and smokers are requested to smoke away from the doors.

Bathrooms

There are three bathroom areas, all gender neutral. To the left of the stage is a dedicated wheelchair accessible bathroom, as well as a bathroom with 3 ambulant accessible toilet cubicles. On the right of the stage there is a smaller bathroom with two urinals and one ambulant accessible toilet cubicle. There are also two toilets available upstairs when the upstairs area is available to the public, however there is no facility for wheelchair access to the upstairs area.

Getting here

Cycling

The Rat is super easy to get to on a bike and there are several areas on the street suitable for chaining up your wheels. We ask that you don’t leave bikes overnight, as the street is a busy industrial zone during the day and the bikes get in the way of our neighbours’ businesses.

Trains

The Rat is a 5-10 minute walk from Sydenham Railway Station. For timetable information, visit Transport NSW.

Buses

The 423, 426 and Metrobus 30 bus services stop at Victoria Rd near Sydenham Rd. It’s a 1 minute walk to Faversham St through Wicks Park from the bus stop: these services operate from Circular Quay via Central. For timetables and maps, Transport NSW.

Driving

There is very limited on-street parking, and we encourage our patrons to use public transport, taxi or cycle.
